Luther Arkwright: Roleplaying Across the Parallels ~ Introduction

Like its subject, the latest release by the Design Mechanism for the top-notch RuneQuest 6th Edition is a varied and wondrous creation. What some might perceive as one world is in reality many – each different, and holding mysteries to be explored, problems to be solved, villains to be stopped, and perhaps even a little woo to be pitched. If you are going to be wrestling with ongoing threats to existence versus an implacable and deadly enemy, you can use a little woo. “What is this release you ask?” no pun intended, of course. The release of which I write is none other than the ‘epic in a bottle’ called Luther Arkwright: Roleplaying Across the Parallels.

Quick Review

LArkwrightcoverLuther Arkwright: Roleplaying Across the Parallels, is a 180-page campaign setting guide and rules expansion for RuneQuest 6th Edition. RuneQuest by the Design Mechanism is one of the finest toolkits for fantasy campaign design that I have ever had the pleasure to read and use. Focused on a bronze age with a variety of magical and mystical elements, a creative GM can turn it to emulate virtually anything they might want from primitive levels of technology on up to the personal use of steel.

With Luther Arkwright in hand, the GM’s creative reach has now been expanded across time and genre to reach from the birth of the Industrial Age to star-faring cultures, taking on whatever aspects of SF and Fantasy you might like along the way.

As inspiration, guide, template, and exciting setting in its own right, the dimensions of Bryan Talbot’s graphic novels showing the exploits of the titular character and his fellow agents against the machinations of the Disruptors across infinite parallels of existence are presented in spell-binding and complete detail.

If you are looking for a compelling and challenging setting to use as is, or looking for a toolkit for invention, SF, psychic powers, dimensional travel, modern or futuristic combat, or some mixture of them all this book may be the answer.

Not So Quick Review

LArkwrightcoverbackThis short series of posts will take a look between the covers of Luther Arkwright: Roleplaying Across the Parallels, exploring the campaign material it draws from the graphic novels of Bryan Talbot, discussing characters and character creation, and finally reviewing the rules which support such an expansive and varied setting.

The first post will review how the campaign material is presented and supported. The second will travel through the character creation process, especially looking at the new elements which help to bring things such as psychic powers, the harrows of addiction, and mental trauma to RQ6. The last will step through the filter of character into the vast expanse of time, space, and technological advancement which the new rules help you shape, and reshape at will.

I hope you will join me in this journey though the dimensions of this ambitious and inspiration-packed offering from the creative minds at The Design Mechanism.

Look forward to hearing more about it. Maybe when I finish reading the Taskan Empire and Shores of Cortania I’ll give it a read.
